A local student group, Guys and Gals on the Go, are collecting used running shoes for One World Running. This non-profit group collects used running shoes and distributes them to shelters and churches within the U.S. and ships them to developing countries around the world. One World Running accepts running shoes in every condition. Shoes that are too worn to pass on are ground up and used to make running tracks and playgrounds. The Chelsea Public Library has agreed to be a drop off point for Guys and Gals on the Go, so bring in those old running shoes that you’ve outgrown or worn out and give them a chance to make a difference in somebody’s life!

One of our fabulous youth & teen librarians, Miss Lisa, will be leaving the Chelsea District Library for a new job!
Lisa will be the Youth and Family Services Director at the Hartford Public Library, a position where she will oversee more than 20 librarians and 7 branch libraries. What a great responsibility! We all know Lisa is more than capable and ready to do great work in her new position.
Lisa has been a librarian at CDL for 3 and 1/2 years and has contributed greatly to the success of our youth programs, most notably, I Need to Read, the Parent/Child Book Club, and, of course, Drama Week. Each summer Lisa has taken 30-40 children of varying levels of theater experience and gets them ready to perform an hour-long play, with stage movement, costumes, and sets in just 6 days! This year’s play, The Magic Tinder Box, was performed on July 16, to great acclaim!
I could go on and on about what a creative, dedicated librarian Lisa is, and what a pleasure it has been to work alongside her–but I would like to take the rest of this space to wish her the best of luck in her bright, bright future!
We will miss you, Miss Lisa!
-Karen, Head of Youth & Teen Services

Be sure to be at the Chelsea Teddy Bear Company (400 N. Main St.) at 1pm on Saturday, July 30, when it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the World Wildlife Fund by creating its panda logo out of stuffed animals. They need the help of children from all over southeast Michigan to help make this happen!
The Company plans on using 3000 stuffed animals to create this 614 square foot design in their driveway and hopes to set a Guiness World Record by doing so–don’t miss this event!
For more information, see this article from Ann Arbor.com or call the Teddy Bear Company at 433-5499.

This summer we will be having a Special Needs Movie Matinee on June 15, 2011, from 2:00-3:30. We will be showing the funny film Yogi Bear for ages birth to 17 years, and carpet squares provide a comfortable, relaxing place to sit.

Would you like to write to a soldier? Or send her/him a care package!
With Armed Forces Day this weekend and Memorial Day on the 30th, it’s time to think of the soldiers that help us overseas. The day was created in 1949 to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches – the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. President Kennedy made it a holiday in 1962.
Honor your troops with a card or a package that says hello from America! Soldiers miss their country, and like to hear news about everyday things from home. Write a letter or send a package with the following websites:
a. Letters to Soldiers
b. Care Package Project
c. Soldiers’ Angels
d. Troop Support
Pick the website you like best and follow the instructions! Remember, because of security reasons you can no longer send letters to “Any Soldier.”
If you would like to read books about soldiers, ask a librarian!
