HP party 2010 (6)Everyone had a spellbinding blast at Friday night’s Harry Potter Party, celebrating the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, on November 19th.

Library patrons were treated to an evening of magic, trivia, crafts, and Butterbeer.  Guests made broomstick bookmarks and protection charms,  created chocolate wands, had a spell dance-off, competed in a costume contest, and played advanced Hogwarts trivia for wonderful prizes.

Special guest Baffling Bill the Magician levitated his young assistant and kept the audience either gasping in awe or laughing at his jokes.

Check out some great pictures of the event, and remember to check out the Harry Potter books to get ready for the movie!

The brother and sister duo of Laura and Rob Sams from Sisbro Studios came to Chelsea on March 22 to teach children how to make movies when working with wildlife.  Part of the Chelsea Reads Together program Wheels to Reels:  Movie Making in Michigan, the program focused on the movie Stranger in the Woods, which was made in Michigan, as well as examined some of their other movies.

Children enjoyed learning the ins and outs of movie making, including how to take photographs.  The Sams told many fun stories about how they got a deer to eat a carrot from the nose of a snowman.

Children and parents alike listened intently to details about how to combine pictures with sound.  Everyone had fun pretending how to be a squirrel, a chickadee, or a drift of snow.

Laura and Rob played the piano, the guitar, and even the washboard to demonstrate what type of music goes best with what scene.

Children acted out different animals and people to see how an illustrator might paint a picture.  Here we see the kids swimming like a one-legged pirate in the sea!

Everyone had a wonderful time, and we learned a lot about making movies and books!

On Sunday, March 7th, library patrons sipped in style at the Chelsea House Victorian Inn, an 1880’s Queen Ann Victorian Inn run by Jim and Kim Myles.  Part of the Chelsea Reads Together:  Wheels to Reels events, the tea was in celebration of the film Somewhere in Time, which was shot almost in entirety at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.   Participants enjoyed Darjeeling Tea and homemade fruit crepes, eclairs and scones as they discussed fascinating facts about the movie.  Did you know that Richard Dreyfuss and Diane Keaton were at one time considered for the leads instead of Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour?
