Welcome to the YSG!  Youth Service Group is a program that allows you to build skills, accumulate volunteer hours and help the library with programs, planning and more!  You must be going into 7th grade to be elligible for this Group.

YOUR YOUTH SERVICE GROUP PACKET IS NOW AVAILABLE!

Part 1: Letter of Explanation

Part 2: 2012 YSG Application

Part 3: YSG Tasks for Summer 2012

This packet contains a registration sheet that requires a parent signature, a set of Guidelines, and a Task List, where you can choose what programs you want to help with over the summer.  Please fill this packet out completely and bring it to a June 1st or June 5th orientation session (3:30-4:30pm). Can’t make it? Simply drop it off at the library’s Check Out Desk.  YSG is now a year-round program, so you can choose to remain on the mailing list for the 2012-2013 school year.

Please read through the guidelines before you start your volunteer shifts.  If you have any questions, please talk to YSG Coordinator Edith Burney, or Head of Youth & Teen Services Karen Persello .

Basic Expectations

  • Dress neatly and appropriately.  If you can’t wear it at school, you can’t wear it at the library. If possible, wear your FREE YSG T-Shirt.
  • Arrive on time and remember to sign in and out.
  • Remember, you represent the library.  Be friendly and courteous to library patrons, but save socializing with friends for before or after your shift.
  • When unsure or uncomfortable, find a Youth  Department staff member for help and guidance.
  • Refer all questions not directly related to your assigned task to a librarian or staff member.
If you are helping with the Summer Reading Registration Table:

  • Arrive at the library on time and sign in.
  • Smile and be friendly towards those approaching your table.
  • Register participants, update reading logs, and hand out drawing slips and prizes when indicated.
  • Work on additional assigned tasks (for example, craft prep).
  • Make sure things are neat at the end of your shift, and sign out.

If you are a Program Volunteer:

  • Arrive at the library 30 minutes before the program, sign in, and help with program setup.
  • Warmly greet participants and welcome them to the program.
  • During the program, move around the room, ready to answer any participant questions.
  • At the end, thank participants for coming and invite them to fill out a comment card.
  • Help with program tear-down and cleanup, and don’t forget to sign out.
