Happy Paczki Day!

Filed under: Current News, Delicious, Party — Teen Blog @ 12:51 pm

Paczki

In Poland, paczki are eaten especially on the last Thursday before Lent, Many Polish Americans celebrate Paczki Day on Fat Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday). Traditionally, the reason for making paczki was to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in the house, because they were forbidden to be consumed due to Catholic fasting practices during Lent. [Info courtesy of Wikipedia]  (Paczki is actually the plural of paczek in Polish, which literally means “doughnut”)

See how they make Paczki!

In Hamtramck, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, there is an annual Paczki Day (Shrove Tuesday) Festival.  On Paczki Day, people line the streets in front of local Polish bakeries to buy paczki, and local restaurants host parties.

In Chelsea, you can get your very own paczek at Pierce’s Pastries Plus.

Candy Making Class at the 1st United Methodist Church

Filed under: Delicious — Teen Blog @ 11:25 pm

Candy MakingUpdate: What a fantastic event!  We had 9 participants, including members of the 4-H ambassadors, who actually taught everyone how to make the candy!

Here are some delicious recipes that you can try at home!

Chocolate Bark

Servings: 1 pound
Prep: 20 mins
Total: 20 mins
Ingredients
1 pound vanilla-flavor chocolate, cut up
3/4 cup crushed fruit-flavor candy canes
Directions
1. Line a baking sheet with foil; set aside. Heat chocolate in a heavy medium saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from heat.
*Please note that in the photo we are spreading milk chocolate because I had the brilliant idea of making double layer chocolate vanilla bark.  It worked.. mostly.
We decided to try a layered bark--chocolate on the bottom!
2. Stir in 1/2 cup of the crushed candy canes. Pour mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Spread mixture to about 3/8-inch thickness. Sprinkle with the remaining crushed candy cane.

3. Chill bark about 30 minutes or until firm. (Or, let bark stand at room temperature for several hours until firm.) Use foil to lift firm candy from the baking sheet; carefully break bark into pieces. Store tightly covered up to 2 weeks. Makes 1 pound (16 servings).

Pretzel Kisses

ingredients: round pretzels, Hershey kisses, and M&Ms
One bag of round pretzels from Pamida and four bags of Hershey kisses will make two full baking sheets of pretzel kisses. One large bag of M&Ms will go a long way, probably something like 6+ baking sheets.
They’re very simple to make. You cover a cookie sheet with the round pretzels; after unwrapping the Hershey kisses, you place one in every pretzel and put them in the oven for 5 minutes at 250  degrees. As soon as they are done, you have to pull them out and quickly put an M&M on every chocolate kiss, pressing down slightly.  Make sure the chocolate kiss smooshes down enough to stick to the pretzel! Then, they just have to sit, preferably in a cool place so they harden more quickly.

Thursday December 3rd, 4:00-7:00 pm

Learn to make delicious sweets! In this class we will be making two different kinds of candies which you can take home and eat, or give to friends and family! Washtenaw County 4-H Teen Ambassadors will teach this class, and all supplies will be provided.
