Computer workstations
The Library provides high speed connections within the library to hard-wired and wireless access and provides wireless access outside of the building as well.  Study tables on the second floor have lighting fixtures that provide Ethernet ports and power outlets.

More than 31 computers are available for public use at Chelsea District Library with Internet access. Computer users are required to login with their library card and pin number for both the wired workstations and for wireless access. The Library provides wireless access both inside the Library and outside.  Please review the Internet Access and Public Computing Use Policy for details on use.

Second Floor:

• 10 workstations for public in the Learning Lab
• 9 workstations for public in the computer area
• 5 workstations for Teens (ages 12-17 only) in TeenSpace
• 1 workstations in public computer area for Express Use – limited to 15 minutes and filtered
• 1 workstation for Genealogy use in the Local History alcove
  

First Floor:

• 5 workstations for Youth (ages 0-12 only) located behind Music, Media & More area
• 1 workstation for Youth Games located behind Music, Media & More area
• 2 workstations for Early Childhood Learning located on activities table in Youth area
  

The Genealogy workstation is reserved for persons wanting to do genealogy research.  This workstation is connected through the public computer system which requires a library card/pin or a visitor slip to access. Two hours of time are allotted to library card holders and visitors are allotted an hour. The workstation is also connected to a digital scanner.

The Express workstation is provided for users to check their email or other short online transaction. This workstation is filtered and is not connected to the library printers.

Public workstations have the Microsoft Office 2007 suite of applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), as well as 2 USB ports, floppy drive, and CD burner. Headphones and privacy screens are located at each machine; you may bring your own headphones if you prefer. The Early Childhood Learning workstations have two sets of headphones per workstation.

Learning Lab
Is located on the second floor and is used for both computer training workshops and general computing.  The lab is equipped with: 10 workstations, a trainer workstation, a data projector, Smart Board, and other AV support equipment. When the lab is schedule for workshops it is closed for public access use. The Library offers several workshops throughout the year.  Please check the Technology Workshops for the most current listing. The Lab cannot be reserved by outside groups.

McKune Room
Is the major Library programming area in the library and available for outsides groups reserved through the Library Meeting policy. The McKune Room is located past the grand staircase and up a short flight of stairs. This room is equipped with: AV Cart containing, a data projector, DVD/VCR/CD playback unit, amplifier, microphones and two portable speakers with stands. a VGA data connector for laptop connection for presentations, also available is an Overhead projector, and a built-in sound cabinet containing a cd playback unit and a fixed sound system with microphones.

Early education computers and the Game computer do not provide Internet access.

KidSpot
Is located in the Youth area on the first floor and is the primary program room for many youth events. The room has:  a fixed ceiling mounted data projector, pull down screen, and AV cabinet consisting of, a DVD/VCR/CD playback unit, VGA connection and small amplifier system with microphones.  The KidSpot cannot be reserved by outside groups.

General policies regarding use of the library's computers:

• Computer use is limited to 60 minutes if others are waiting. If no one is waiting at the end of your 60-minute session, you may have an extended session.
• Be sure to save what you are working on regularly, as any work you have saved on the computer and your history of visited web sites will be deleted at the end of each
  60-minute period.
• If all computers are full, you may sign up for the wait list at the scheduling station. When you are assigned a computer, you have five minutes to log on before you forfeit your reservation.

Chelsea District Library provides free wireless internet access, should you wish to connect to the internet using your personal laptop.

You can also connect your laptop to the library's network using the Ethernet (RJ-45) cables that are located at the tables on the second floor.

To connect your laptop to the library's network, you will need to log on using your library card number and PIN, just as you would from a library computer.

Please note that laptops will not be able to connect to the library's printers.

Internet access throughout the library - whether on library computers or laptops - is filtered for those under 18 years old in compliance with Michigan Public Act 212. Parents or guardians chose filtering levels when signing their children up for access.

Library cardholders can register for access at the circulation desk on the first floor. Filtered and unfiltered guest access is available by request at the second-floor information desk. Librarians and volunteers are available to provide help with access to and use of computers.

Chelsea District Library uses an advanced filtering system called SAM (Smart Access Manager), provided by a company called Comprise. This technology allows parents to choose a specific level of filtering for their children while still allowing adults unfiltered access to the Internet. By employing this technology, the library is able to comply fully with Michigan Public Act 212 of 2000.

Chelsea District Library provides printing services for patrons. Both Color and black-and-white printing options are available on the second floor.

Printing Charges:

• Black and White Printing: 15 cents per page
• Color Printing: 50 cents per page

Users will need to add money to their cards in order to print at the Account Payment Machine (APM) located near the Xerox copier in the Chelsea Area History Room.
